Liposuction
Defined
Liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to remove pockets of excess fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction (UAL) employs the use of high frequency sound waves to liquefy fat cells prior to their removal. With ultrasonic removal, we can achieve smoother results, particularly in fibrous areas. Liposuction is performed in our office operating suite.
Tumescent
Liposuction
Tumescent liposuction refers to a technique that uses large volumes of very dilute local anesthesia that is injected into the fat causing the targeted areas to be come tumescent, or swollen and firm. Local anesthesia is widely regarded as the safest form of anesthesia. Because local anesthesia persists for many hours there is no need for narcotic pain medications after surgery. If you have questions about this technique please contact Dr. Pensler at (312)642-7777.
Modified
Tumescent Liposuction
Modified tumescent liposuction refers to a combination of tumescent local anesthesia plus some form of systemic anesthesia (general anesthesia or heavy IV sedation).
Different
Liposuction Techniques
There are many ways to perform a liposuction procedure. Within the realm of liposuction, maximum speed and maximum volume of aspirate are not criteria for excellence. Ultimately, excellence is measured in terms of patient happiness which is a function of safety, patient comfort, finesse, and quality of results. The important distinction between liposuction surgeons who are board certified is the liposuction technique that they utilize. The plastic surgeon should be familiar with all of the techniques currently utilized so as to be able to chose the optimum technique or techniques for each patient. Dr. Pensler is nationally and internationally recognized for his techniques in liposuction. Please email or call Dr. Pensler's office for additional information.
Side
Effects
Liposuction complications are often the direct result of lack of caution, poor judgment, over confidence, or adherence to faulty dogma. Temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, or burning sensation may result post-operatively. It is common to have fluid drainage the first evening from the incisions. Typically individuals may return to work 24 to 48 hours after the procedure.
Risks
Risks of Liposuction must be well understood by all prospective liposuction patients. This web site emphasizes the need to be aware of safety issues. In order to minimize the risk of liposuction, the patient should understand:
Recovery
Patients are typically back to work in one to two days. Most patients may resume exercising in less than one week. The patients results continue to improve for approximately sixteen weeks following surgery, particularly in cases where ultrasonic cannulae have been used there is continual loss of fat and recontouring of the surrounding tissue. A garment is useful to help optimize the results following surgery so we provide several garments to each patient. The garments are made of a spandex material. The more elastic the individual’s skin is, the better the final result. Patients with localized deposits of fat are the ideal candidates for liposuction.
